Strange Beautiful Music II
new music detroitPosted by Ian Sun, August 10, 2008 09:48PMWe're deep into the planning stages of Strange Beautiful Music II, our 12-hour new music marathon, to be held this year at MOCAD (www.mocadetroit.org) on . . .
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2008, from 12pm-12am
$12 for a day pass; $8 after 8pm.
Save the date!
This year's featured composers will include Detroit's favorite eclectic Frank Pahl (of Only A Mother and Little Toy Band fame) and New York's D.J. Sparr (www.djsparr.com) and Marc Mellits (www.marcmellits.com). They'll be performing alongside us, and we'll be premiering new works by all three of them.
Free improvisation will also be featured heavily on the program, from appearances by edgy Detroit 'noise' artists Graveyards (featuring John Olson from Wolf Eyes) and Slither, and freewheeling performances by NMD's resident guitar virtuoso Robert Tye.
Other guest artists will include Virgil Moorefield (www.virgilmoorefield.com), the Ann Arbor-based experimental composer and drummer for such legendery artists as Glenn Branca and Swans; Andrew Russo (www.russocentral.com), solo pianist extraordinaire and member of the New York new music ensemble Real Quiet; Jessica Sherwood, flutist for the Atlanta-based electro-acoustic ensemble Sonic Generator (www.sonicgenerator.gatech.edu/); and our very own Motor City Jazz Orchestra (www.motorcityjazzorchestra.com), who will perform charts by Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Steely Dan, and Jeff Beck...
... and of course, the usual suspects from New Music Detroit, plus friends from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the University of Michigan.
Hope to see you there!
p.s. Stay tuned also for the upcoming rollout of our new website.
